Making Low-Code Great at Any Speed

One of the best things about low-code development platforms such as Mendix is it makes it possible to develop more applications than ever. Unfortunately, so long as humans write code there will always be issues. The more applications deployed the more issues there inevitably will be. Most of those issues can be resolved in a matter of minutes. The trouble is it can take weeks to determine the root cause of an issue. Before long, development teams are spending more time trying to fix issues in existing applications than they do writing new code.

Application Performance Diagnostics (APD)

One of the world’s largest oil and gas companies turned to the Application Performance Diagnostics (APD) cloud service created by Mansystems, the world’s largest independent provider of Mendix expertise, to resolve that paradox. APD makes it possible for developers to analyze the performance of the Mendix applications they build to the deepest level possible. Optimized specifically for the Mendix development model, APD analyzes all activities in the application, including underlying functions and user behavior, to give the developer full insight in the performance of the application.

The software engineers at the oil and gas company employ APD during all phases of application development and deployment.

“We use it for predictive development in the development phase, we use it in the testing phase, and we also use it to troubleshoot after we go live,” says the systems engineer.

Wide variety of applications

The conglomerate’s typical applications are a mix of cross companywide departmental apps that are most used internally. That doesn’t mean applications are small. Some of those applications have thousands of users, notes the software engineer.

In the absence of APD, troubleshooting applications to the level of detail required would be extremely tedious, adds the engineer.

“We use APD for trapping errors quite regularly. This helps us save time, and the user does not have to reproduce the error,” says the engineer. “I don’t know what I would do without APD.”

APD is primarily relied on to surface issues long before the application ever gets deployed. Other issues are identified before most end users are even aware they exist. Organizations that make use of APD are inherently proactive. Teams that don’t have access to APD can only address an issue once an end-user makes a complaint to the help desk.

APD is also available to new developers that join the development team at the oil and gas company.

“Our Mendix development team consists of a product owner, architect, senior and junior developers and citizen developers. All of them get trained in and use APD daily,” said the engineer. “APD is a part of the Mendix Bootcamp as a Mendix developer joins our team.”

Application Code Reviewer (ACR)

Software engineers at the oil and gas company said they are also looking to using APD in conjunction with the Application Code Reviewer (ACR) tool from Mansystems.

“Drilling down on a bad performing microflow to see if the best practices in code review are being followed would be something that we like,” says the engineer.

Like most organizations being able to build and deploy applications, faster is critical to success. However, quality can’t be sacrificed in the name of speed, especially at an oil and gas company that prides itself on excellence.

“A quality-driven approach is valued across all aspects of our business. It is one of our core values,” says the software engineer. “We bought the complete package because ultimately we want to deliver the best possible applications.”
