THE GOAL

More than a garden centre, Intratuin aims to deliver a “green experience.” The company currently has 60 branches: 51 in the Netherlands, five in Belgium and four in Germany.

Its full range comprises more than 700,000 products and Intratuin wanted to improve its management of these, making it a more efficient, service-oriented and future-focused company with scope for international growth.

This was a real challenge for Intratuin. The company has always been keen to promote the independence of its various branches, so as well as stocking the mandatory core range of products, individual managers are encouraged to add other items that will appeal to local markets.

However, adding these products to the standard range was not compatible with the company’s existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Instead, they had to be entered manually. Furthermore, individual branch managers didn’t have access to the ERP, meaning placing orders was a time-consuming and error-prone process.

When Intratuin’s ERP was due for an update, it took the opportunity to review its product management system and turned to CLEVR for its expertise.

THE APPROACH

Intratuin chose CLEVR because the low-code and no-code solutions expert specialises in retail processes and understood exactly what Intratuin wanted to do. This meant the process would be as smooth and simple as possible, and give optimum results.

Another important reason for choosing CLEVR was that it knows exactly how to get the most out of product data management (PDM) and product information management (PIM) applications.

CLEVR’s solution as part of the ERP update was to incorporate product management within the PDM and PIM applications. The PDM serves as a portal for product orientation. As products – for example, garden sets and cushions – are added to the Intratuin range, the information is fed from the PDM into the ERP environment. PIM enriches this with text and images compatible with all channels to support the garden centre’s omnichannel strategy.

THE RESULTS

CLEVR’s Promotion Manager system has made the process from product orientation to the enrichment of product information faster, more efficient and more flexible. Intratuin’s internal data-management department and individual branch managers are now working together on one workflow.

Given the success of this, the next step that Intratuin wants to introduce is to give suppliers access to the platform. It will create a triangle comprising Intratuin, the individual managers of each branch and suppliers – meaning all can directly submit proposals for a new range.

With these new applications, Intratuin is laying a solid foundation now, with flexibility for its future.

ING

Helping ING build an app to communicate with customers – and get it right first time – without needing IT engineers.

Financial Services
THE GOAL

ING aims to be industry-leading and get things right first time. To that end, it empowers its employees to step up, make their mark and help the company shine.

Its experts in the Netherlands work in small, multidisciplinary, self-organising teams known as squads, which have end-to-end responsibility for their customer journeys. This minimises handovers and maximises autonomy while providing an excellent customer experience. To support the autonomy of these teams, ING provides an environment in which they can easily create processes and communicate with their customers.

When it came to creating an app to facilitate this, ING needed to ensure it would be immediately useful to the business. Hence there was a need for a rigorous, automated test tool compliant with internal development rules and security guidelines. The tool needed to be user-friendly for non-IT personnel – the typical users of the Mendix platform at ING – and a key requirement was the creation of reusable test scripts to be used across app environments by the Mendix team and their testers.

THE APPROACH

ING’s Document & Content Services (D&CS) department worked with low-code and no-code specialists CLEVR to build and test a Mendix app to facilitate outbound processes and transactional communications with its customers in the Netherlands.

The development cycle included a crucial testing stage with the Mendix Application Test Suite (ATS) – a cloud service designed for non-IT personnel. Created specifically for the Mendix platform, it is built on top of Selenium (the standard at ING).

The Mendix team (EmpowerING) consists of Mendix developers, testers and customer journey experts. By using the Mendix ATS, a constant feedback loop was established, providing information for developers by reproducing issues found by the testers. The user story acceptance criteria included a test-automation requirement. To date, ING has run more than 2,200 automated tests. If the tool is unable to follow the path, one of the team members builds an action to assist. The team is fully capable of doing all this by themselves.

THE RESULTS

Thanks to Mendix ATS, ING was able to launch a fully tested app on time. The team achieved complete test coverage, ensuring the quality of the app and its immediate adoption, as well as meeting internal development and security guidelines. They got it right first time, and without needing IT engineers.

Using the same test cases in different app environments, ING saves considerable time as it can continuously repeat automated test cases, without rewriting them each time. The team can also identify issues they wouldn’t find testing the app manually. For example, ING found a major database issue that otherwise wouldn’t have come to light. Mendix ATS has also improved feedback within the team.

Even beyond the modelling phase, Mendix ATS enables the ING team to have continuous control. Every four-hour automatic test run provides proof the app is working, proving that each use case of the application is fulfilled. As an added bonus, the quality of the app has motivated ING to deliver more Mendix apps, and has reinforced acceptance of the Mendix platform at ING.

CUSTOMER QUOTE
“By using ATS, we increased the immediate adoption of the app by the business. This is one of the most important success criteria for us”

Odda Technology

Paving the way to develop a new standard for the digital exchange of component information.

Manufacturing
Teamcenter
THE GOAL

Odda Technology is a Norwegian-based global turnkey supplier of high-accuracy metal products for industrial use. It is a company drawing on a long history of industrial expertise. CLEVR is an emerging name in product lifecycle management (PLM) system integration. An innovative project saw the two companies partnering to establish an industry standard where manufacturers use 3D models as the basis for production.

Odda Technology had started to digitalise the process that took products with a low-production volume from design to being ready for manufacturing start-up. This project was supported by Innovation Norway – a state-owned company encouraging entrepreneurship – with partners being large engineering companies that design equipment and components for the oil and gas industry.

Odda Technology needed support in streamlining the process from customer drawing board to initiating production in a way that maintained high quality levels. CLEVR – a low-code and no-code solutions expert – provided the expertise in this digital transformation.

THE APPROACH

Odda Technology faced the challenge that low-cost countries usually beat Norway on hourly rates for personnel. It is one of the reasons why the Norwegian industry is not a big player in mass production. It does, however, lead the way in producing parts and components in smaller series where very high demands are placed on quality, accuracy and precision – for example the production of coupling components for the subsea industry. This incorporates deliveries to the offshore industry, which has made Norway a world leader in underwater technology.

Odda Technology produces numerous products that are roughly the same, but unlike regular series production, each product is uniquely tailored to suit a specific facility on the seabed. This type of production is often referred to as one-piece flow, or continuous flow. Each product must be designed, calculated, described and documented in meticulous detail before it can be produced. There was a need to streamline this process.

The existing processes were highly labour-intensive and required a lot of specialist knowledge. But there was a desire to develop this expertise further to ensure it contributes to even greater improvements in efficiency and create a fully automated setup procedure. Achieving it paves the way for developing a new standard for the digital exchange of component information – from design to finished parts.

CLEVR also supported this digital transformation project through technology solutions and highly specialised consulting services.

THE RESULTS

Large, future-focused engineering companies that design equipment and components for the oil and gas industry recognised the value of this project and were keen to be involved.

The project has the potential to give the industrial sector a genuine competitive edge. Norway is already a world leader in the development and production of advanced industrial parts. The next big step in industrial systems manufacturing is the digitalisation of this type of process. It will help the broader industry work smarter and more efficiently, and stay ahead in terms of competence and expertise. The project will also bring synergies in other industries and is considered to have global scalability.

City of Rotterdam

Helping the city push forward its innovation – and serve residents better – by developing high-quality applications.

THE GOAL

Rotterdam is one of the biggest cities in the Netherlands and has the largest information technology (IT) department. In 2016 the city began a digitalisation programme to meet the many and varying needs of its inhabitants and to encourage efficiency and innovation through digital transformation.

However, the City of Rotterdam’s IT department was plagued by high costs, limited capacity and long lead times. Many of the apps that had been requested from across city departments became obsolete due to delays, leading to departments having to outsource the work to external developers. This led to ‘Shadow IT’ chaos, with disparate systems being created by different third parties without any consistency and sometimes without the approval of the city’s IT department.
And all these apps needed to be placed on the central IT infrastructure to be effective – which was not always possible.

The City of Rotterdam needed a more Agile, easy to use, low-code platform that staff could get to grips with quickly and which would have the option to reuse building blocks in other apps, and it turned to low-code and no-code specialist CLEVR.

THE APPROACH

Using CLEVR’s expertise in the high productivity app platform Mendix, in conjunction with Rotterdam’s Rapid Application Development (RAD) team, a series of useful citizen-centric apps were created that connect to the city’s current IT structure.

A series of workshops were held so different city departments could present app ideas, as well as assess common issues and concerns. And CLEVR’s consultants worked on site to help the City of Rotterdam’s own Mendix developers use the platform more effectively. This led to a framework being set up where if an app was being developed that didn’t work, it could be easily adjusted.

THE RESULTS

CLEVR helped develop a number of apps aimed at making dealing with the City of Rotterdam and its departments simpler and more efficient for residents to navigate.

Early projects of simplifying the Special Assistance process and upgrading an existing app for street surveillance and enforcement were joining by a signpost app. This was designed to direct members of the public to the best relevant department online to deal with their query. Meanwhile a new app for drivers makes it easier for visitors to the city to pay for parking. An app for incoming subsidy registration was created to allow the city to better explain the process and the reasons behind decisions, and where issues arose with outdated infrastructure, a temporary solution was put in place to allow the city’s IT system to handle the latest integration technology.

Rotterdam now plans to have a RAD team of 14 people by 2023, which is fully Agile and covers all disciplines including UX/UI development and testing. CLEVR will continue to support the city as needed with its progressive philosophy.

CUSTOMER QUOTE
“Mendix can be learned quickly and it is easy to use. Users can achieve a lot themselves and have the option of reusing building blocks in other apps. If the app you built doesn’t deliver the intended result, you can adjust it again or throw it away. This fits with the new way of working”

Mendix
THE GOAL

To create an easily accessible online platform that brings tenants, property managers, and maintenance companies together in one place to make arranging and managing housing maintenance more efficient. The idea to use smart technology to find the right technician for each maintenance job came from a desire to improve and simplify the relationship between the tenant, housing corporation and the maintenance companies. Ziezodan also wanted to incorporate scheduling repair work once a fault had been notified in a way that suits all parties including the tenant, whose needs have historically often been overlooked, as well as reducing operational costs and improving customer experience.

THE APPROACH

All too often there has been a mismatch between the supply of and demand for maintenance workers. Challenges around arranging access at suitable times has only compounded the problem. Ziezodan was created with the help of low-code and no-code specialist consultancy CLEVR to address both needs.

It uses Mendix low-code technology along with Ortec’s scheduling algorithm to plan work while a database stores details relevant to the project, such as the skills needed, what the problem appears to be and an optimised route for the technician. Meanwhile, CLEVR’s Insight module is used for data visualisation, smart business intelligence and data science apps.

THE RESULTS

The innovative Ziezodan platform is helping everyone involved in property maintenance. The tenant gets more choice over when any work will be done. The housing corporation finds contractors with the right skills and available time. The contractors find out about possible work, what skills are needed and where the job is. Furthermore, the platform gives an up-to-date view of any job including outstanding work, final reports and KPIs. This is particularly useful at predicting how similar jobs may pan out and the resources that might be needed.

THE GOAL

Louwman is one of Europe’s largest car dealerships, selling the leading global car marques from high end to mass market including Toyota, Peugeot, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Lexus, Bentley, Morgan, Maserati and Kia. The cars are sold through a number of operating companies including the Louwman Dealer Group, Alcredis and Welzog.

The parent group wanted to be able to produce creative, customer-oriented business applications in-house so that it could roll out new concepts fast and efficiently and build on the success of the core Louwman Group.

THE APPROACH

Louwman had been successfully working with the low-code development platform Mendix for several years. The platform’s speed, ease of integration with back-office systems, standard links for Internet of Things and its facility to generate native mobile apps had all contributed to a positive experience and 20 business apps had been built using it

Louwman Group had also been working in collaboration with low-code and no-code specialists CLEVR for several years and based on the low-code and no-code experts’ philosophy of empowering its clients to use the Mendix platform independently, it approached CLEVR to help create a Mendix Expert Center (MEC). This sits within the Louwman Group’s ICT services operation, thereby bringing app development in-house. It also provides IT services to all Louwman companies.

The project includes training existing Louwman staff and those joining the group so that they are empowered to work independently of CLEVR using the Mendix platform.

THE RESULTS

The MEC was opened on 1st January 2019 as a facility available to all members of the Louwman Group. Today, the Louwman Group can innovate faster, make more creative business decisions and is developing all its business apps in-house.
